I’m in a Leadership Role, Now What?

To the Women of Color in Leadership………Congratulations on your new leadership role! As a woman of color, you bring a unique perspective and valuable insights to the table. However, navigating a new leadership role can be challenging, and it's essential to embrace your new role with confidence and clarity. In this blog post, we will discuss some tips on how to embrace your new leadership role as a woman of color. I know that some people may say why bring race or ethnicity into this? My response to this question is because it matters. As a person of color in a leadership role, I offer you this advice:

  1. Be confident in your abilities: You were chosen for this leadership role for a reason. You have the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to excel in this role. Embrace your new role with confidence and trust in your abilities. You belong here!

  2. Be a role model and always pay it forward: As a woman of color in a leadership role, you have the opportunity to be a role model for others. Show your team and others in your workplace that diversity and inclusion are important to you. Lead by example and create a workplace culture that values and celebrates diversity.

  3. Build strong relationships: This is probably the most challenging part of being in a leadership role. Building strong relationships with your team and colleagues is essential. Take the time to get to know your team members, listen to their concerns, and provide support when needed. Building strong relationships can help you gain trust and respect from your team and colleagues. Being in leadership can be very isolating, so this is important.

  4. Don’t be afraid to speak up: Use your new position of power to speak up for what you believe in. Be an advocate for diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Use your platform to promote positive change and support underrepresented groups. Your voice matters.

  5. Seek mentorship and support: Finding a mentor or seeking support from other women of color in leadership roles can be valuable. Reach out to others who have gone through similar experiences and seek guidance and support. Remember, you are not alone, and there are others who have gone through similar experiences.

Embracing your new leadership role as a woman of color can be challenging, but it's also an opportunity to make a positive impact in the workplace. By being confident in your abilities, being a role model, building strong relationships, speaking up, and seeking mentorship and support, you can excel in your new leadership role and inspire others to do the same. Remember, your unique perspective and experiences are valuable, and they can help to shape a more inclusive and equitable workplace culture.
